How I Practice Yoga (When I Don’t Feel Like Practicing Yoga Asana)
Some days, I don’t want to roll out my mat. Life feels busy, my body feels tired, or my brain just isn’t there. But yoga doesn’t disappear when that happens—it shifts. It shows up in smaller, softer ways that meet me where I am.
Here are some of the ways I practice yoga when I don’t feel like “practicing yoga”:
1. Three deep breaths at my desk
A mini reset I can always come back to. Even on the busiest days, three breaths change the pace.
2. A shoulder stretch while my coffee brews
It’s not a full flow, but it’s enough to notice tension and let it go.
3. Choosing rest instead of pushing through
Sometimes the yoga is not doing more—it’s listening and stopping.
4. Listening to the sound of water
Whether it’s a river, a fountain, or even the shower—this is nada yoga, or sound meditation.
5. Pausing on a walk to notice one tree in detail
The bark, the leaves, the roots. Dharana—focus—woven into a daily routine.
6. Standing tall, feeling my feet on the earth
A mountain pose without a mat. A reminder that grounding is always available.
7. Watching a candle, campfire, or the sunrise/sunset
Trataka—meditation with the eyes. A moment of focus that feels ancient and steady.
8. Lying down before bed with one hand on the belly, one on the heart
A simple body scan, planting the seeds of yoga nidra as I drift into sleep.
These are small practices, but they remind me why yoga is more than movement—it’s presence, attention, and connection. Even on days when I don’t feel like practicing, yoga still finds me.
